Russia’s Lavrov calls for appointing new UN envoy to Libya
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called for the swift appointment of a new UN envoy to Libya. He made this appeal during a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati in Moscow.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister on his part emphasized the need for the Libyan people to determine their own future. He also stressed the importance of ending the conflict in Sudan.
Currently, Stephanie Koury is fulfilling the duties of the UN envoy after Abdoulaye Bathily resigned in mid-April. Koury has been engaging in talks with various Libyan political factions, but no new envoy has been appointed to replace Bathily. Bathily stepped down after his initiative to bring together the five key Libyan political groups for negotiations failed, hindering efforts to resolve the issues that had blocked the 2021 elections.
