Germany assists Morocco’s earthquake reconstruction program with €100 million loan

Germany has granted Morocco a €100 million loan to assist the Kingdom’s earthquake reconstruction program, alleviate the socio-economic burdens placed on the local population, and assist in managing the aftermath of the disaster that hit Morocco in September last year.

The loan agreement was signed in Rabat on Wednesday by Minister in charge of Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, and Sandra Rohleder, Head of Division at the German Development Bank (KfW).

Lekjaa stressed during the signing ceremony the importance of this contract aimed at “financing part of the direct aid allocated to households,” and which constitutes “a further concrete expression” of the exemplary and lasting partnership between Morocco and Germany.

He further commended the agreement as a testament to the longstanding collaboration between the two countries, particularly in the context of major reform programs and infrastructure projects undertaken by Morocco.

For his part, Germany’s ambassador to Rabat Robert Dölger expressed satisfaction at the signing of this contract, which will make a significant contribution to the reconstruction of the stricken region, in a spirit of solidarity with Morocco and its people.

“I believe that this contribution from Germany will really help to make a difference for those affected by the earthquake”, he said, adding that it constitutes an excellent example of the quality of friendly relations between the two countries.

At the end of the ceremony, Lekjaa and Rohleder expressed satisfaction with the level of partnership ties between Morocco and Germany, and affirmed their willingness to engage in joint reflection to increase and strengthen access to KfW’s financial resources.
