Bamako Rips Up Algiers Accord, Dealing another Hard Blow to Algerian Diplomacy
Mali rulers have axed the 2015 Algiers Agreement signed by the various warring parties in the West African country, dealing another hard blow to the Algerian diplomacy which is suffering setback after setback.
In a statement read Thursday on state television, Mali’s government spokesperson Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga said it was no longer possible to continue with the agreement due to the failure of other signatories to honor their commitments and the “hostile acts” by chief mediator Algeria.
Thus, the so-called Algiers Accord was no longer workable, he stressed, announcing its end with immediate effect. The spokesperson for the Malian government also cited Algeria’s “increasing unfriendly acts, hostility and interference in Mali’s internal affairs”.
The Malian firm stand comes a few days after the two countries clashed at the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held incapital, Kampala.
At the summit, the Algerian delegation tried to impose a paragraph in the final declaration, seeking NAM’s support for the 2015 Algiers Agreement. Malian foreign minister Abdoulaye Diop strongly opposed the Algerian attempt to interfere again in Malian affairs, urging NAM countries to stop referring to the Algiers Agreement in their documents as this agreement has been definitively buried by the Malian authorities.
Last month, Mali summoned the Algerian ambassador over “interference” and “unfriendly acts” after Algiers held talks with Tuareg separatists without consultation or coordination with Bamako.
