Africa-Football: Morocco Wins 5 CAF Awards 2023, Best-ever Tally

Morocco has won most of the 2023 Awards of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rewarding the best African teams, coaches and players for their outstanding achievements and performance.

In a ceremony held Monday in Marrakesh, Moroccan football team won the best men’s team award for their stunning performance at Qatar World Cup 2022. The Atlas Lions made history after reaching the semi-finals, becoming the first Arab & African team to make it this so far in a FIFA World Cup tournament.

Morocco’s Walid Regragui was crowned CAF’s Best Coach of the Year in the Men’s category. He was recognized for guiding the Atlas Lions to a historic World Cup semi-final run in Qatar.

Moroccan Yassine Bounou clinched the trophy of Goalkeeper of the Year. His countrywomen Fatima Tagnaout (AS FAR) received the title of “Interclub Player of the Year and Nesryne El Chad gained the inaugural CAF Women’s Young Player of the Year award.

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala won the biggest individual awards.

In a report published lately, the FIFA said Morocco’s football achievements and rise were “no accident”. It cited the men’s national team reaching the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the women’s national team reaching the round of 16 at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, the U-17s also reaching the last 16 at the recent FIFA U-17 World Cup, and the U-23s winning this year’s U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, qualifying for next year’s Olympic Games in the process.
