Frontex Chief calls Morocco ‘strategic’ partner in countering cross-border crime

The Executive Director of the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders (Frontex), Hans Leijtens, emphasized Morocco’s pivotal role as a strategic partner in countering cross-border crime.

“Morocco is one of our strategic partners, and it’s evident that we need each other in cooperation to fight cross-border crime [and] to manage borders,” stated Leijtens in his first visit outside of Europe.

Leijtens, in recognizing Morocco’s significance as a key ally, expressed the interdependence between Frontex and Morocco, underlining the shared commitment to overcoming challenges that transcend geographical boundaries.

Leijtens further commended Morocco for its commendable performance in border management, a testament to the country’s dedication to security and cooperation. “I want to congratulate [Moroccan authorities] with the results they are doing right now; a perfect job at their borders,” he said.

The discussions held with Moroccan authorities focused on the challenges faced by both parties, fostering an open exchange of experiences and insights, Leijtens added, highlighting the constructive dialogue between Frontex and Moroccan officials.

Expressing optimism for the future, Leijtens conveyed confidence in the potential for an enhanced collaboration between Moroccan authorities and Frontex. In this regard, he conveyed Frontex’s readiness to provide assistance while also expressing a keen interest in learning from Morocco’s experiences.

“I’m very confident that we will enhance cooperation between Moroccan authorities and Frontex. We offer them our help, and we’re eager to learn from them,” affirmed Leijtens, emphasizing the reciprocity and mutual benefit inherent in the partnership.
