Rabat: UN under SG for Peace Operations meets Morocco’s Commander of South Zone, Foreign Minister

Inspector General of Royal Armed Forces & Commander of the South Zone, Lt. General Mohamed Berrid, received Thursday in Rabat Jean Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations.

No details were disclosed on the issues discussed during the meeting which comes after the talks held Wednesday by the UN official with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

Speaking to journalists following his talks with Moroccan top diplomat, Mr. Lacroix thanked the Kingdom for its long-standing commitment and contributions of Royal Armed forces to UN peacekeeping operations.

He paid tribute in this regard to the Moroccan Blue Helmets for the peacekeeping missions they carry out with dedication and commitment in various regions in Africa.

“We look to the future with Morocco,” he said, highlighting the challenges facing the UN in its peacekeeping operations.

For his part, Bourita reiterated the Kingdom’s firm support, in accordance with royal instructions, to the various initiatives carried out by the UN Secretary General since 2017, in particular UN Action for Peacekeeping “A4P” to address the multidimensional challenges facing peacekeeping operations.

The current geopolitical changes in the world, the UN Peacekeeping Operations which are celebrating their 75th anniversary require a new comprehensive and inclusive approach adapted to the reality on the ground and involving all stakeholders, he said.

The minister expressed the Kingdom’s full support for the Summit of the Future scheduled for the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in 2024, with the hope that it will lead to a new vision with precise objectives for the strengthening of multilateralism and the global review of the peacekeeping architecture.

He also recalled Morocco’s commitments to the UN “Women, Peace and Security” Action Plan, as well as the initiatives against hate speech and misinformation against UN peacekeepers.

Morocco is among the top ten countries in the world that contribute to UN peacekeeping operations.
