FIFA Women’s World Cup: Morocco Makes History, Becoming 1st Team in MENA to Reach Knock-Out Stage
Morocco’s women football team beat Colombia 1-0 to advance to the last 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place in Australia.
In their first World Cup appearance, the Atlas Lionesses made history after securing a place
in the Round of 16 thanks to their victory over Colombia in their final Group H match played Thursday in Berth.
Anissa Lahmari scored for the Moroccans on a rebound after a saved penalty at the end of the first half. The Atlas Lionesses dominated the match right from the outset, displaying prowess and determination to win.
They showed exceptional skill, enjoying more possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Despite the intense battle on the field, clear-cut chances were scarce during the first half of the game.
Morocco, who were defeated 6-0 by Germany in their opener before beating South Korea 1-0, will meet France in Adelaide in the next round. This may be an opportunity for the Atlas Lionesses to avenge the men’s defeat in Qatar last year.
However, regardless of the result, their historic journey will inspire girls across the African continent and the Arab World to pursue their dreams.
