Mired in double-speak, European parliament turns blind eye to Algeria’s rights violation

The European Parliament has withdrawn a resolution condemning Algeria’s crackdown on the media and its freedom of speech violation, a move that was orchestrated by Macron’s MEPs.

The resolution was intended to denounce the muzzling of the media by the Algerian regime and the arrest of journalists including editor in chief of the country’s last free media radio M.

“The resolution defending the freedom of the press was removed from the agenda at the initiative of Macron’s deputies of Renew group,” Le Figaro said.

The withdrawal of the text condemning Algeria’s violation was taken at a context Algeria’s president Tebboune was planning a visit to Paris on May 2-5.

The visit was reportedly postponed due to what Algerian opposition figures described as disagreements over Tebboune’s request for Paris to ban any anti-Algerian regime protests.

“With Macron’s deputies at the European parliament, all for Algeria and all against Morocco,” said French MEP Thierry Mariani.

France “is doing all it can to seduce President Tebboune even if it had to fall into double-speak,” he said.

Macron’s top advisor and head of renew group Stephane Sejourne has shown antagonistic activism against Morocco politicizing press freedom to undermine ties between Rabat and Brussels through a biased resolution in January.
