Libya: GNA Education minister resigns amid calls for dismissal

The education minister of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) has resigned from his job after the cabinet split his ministry and teachers called for his dismissal.

Osman Abdel Jalil tendered his resignation Thursday after GNA head Faiez Serraj divided his department into two: public education ministry and higher education ministry.

Abdel Jalil became few days ago a target of demonstrations after teachers protested in the Libyan capital and called for his dismissal after he froze the salaries of over 150,000 teachers and 800 staffers at the ministry.

The ministry on Sunday reportedly indicated that the teachers have been receiving salaries without providing documents while the ministry’s administrative staff were violating the law including absence without permission.
