Kalmar to upgrade capabilities of STS cranes at Eurogate Tanger

Cargotec subsidiary Kalmar has won a contract to upgrade four ZPMC ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at the Eurogate Tanger container terminal in Morocco.

The modernization of cranes will enable Eurogate Tanger, located on the Strait of Gibraltar in Morocco, to manage large ships, Kalmar said in a press release.

Due to its geostrategic location, Eurogate Tanger (EGT) acts as a transhipment center for the Western Mediterranean, Africa, and North and South America.

Kalmar Automation Solutions sales vice-president Eduardo Prat said: “Eurogate Tanger has been an important partner of ours for many years, so we are delighted to be able to help them future-proof their operations, ready for handling the next generation of mega-size vessels.”

Under the terms of the contract, Kalmar will plan, engineer and implement the whole project. The contractor will also increase the height of the four STS cranes by 11m and extend the booms by 6m.

Eurogate Tanger CEO Andrea Cervia said: “With this investment, which is the biggest since the commencement of operations in 2008, EGT will be ready from the second half of next year to accommodate the latest generation Ultra Large Container Ships with a capacity of 23,000 TEU, working up to 25 rows across.

“In this way, we are looking to the future, because we intend to confirm and extend our role as the transhipment hub of choice in the Mediterranean, enabling us to continue to offer a top-level service to our customers.

“We decided to partner with Kalmar once again because of the proven track record and technical expertise of their dedicated crane upgrades team.”

Kalmar said that the project is expected to commence during the first quarter of next year with a scheduled completion date in the second quarter of 2021.

The terminal will consist of “a quay length of 812 m, a terminal area of 400,000 m² and a water depth of up to 18 meters,” said Kalmar.
