Pretoria investigates alleged sexual harassment scandal involving Algerian ambassador

The South African foreign ministry has summoned Algeria’s ambassador after police in Pretoria launched a probe into sexual harassment allegations leveled by a woman against the diplomat.

Pretoria has expressed its concern to Abd El Naceur Belaid, 64, suspected of unethical behaviors, involving sexual attacks, on a 42-year old single woman working at the Algerian mission.

The woman reported Belaid to Brooklyn police in the South African capital for the behaviors she was victim of in March.

According to the law enforcement establishment, which opened an investigation, the harassment was common between 2013 and 2016.

The scandal involving Belaid has become the talk of town. One unnamed South African official argued on local radio station “Jakaranda FM” that diplomatic immunity does not grant diplomats a blank check to breach the law.
