Floods kill five in northern Algeria

Heavy snowfall in northeastern Algeria propelled floods that took the life of five people and blocked several roads.

“All the victims have been retrieved over the last 48 hours after being swept away by waters in Annaba, El Tarf, Tizi Ouzou and Tipaza,” the civil protection body said.

About 100 people have been rescued as highlands in northern Algeria experience snowstorms.

Thirty-three roads remain blocked in over 10 regions because of snow.

Bad weather also forced the state-run company Air Algeria to cancel several domestic flights on Thursday and Friday.

The National Meteorological Office (NMO) urged people to stay indoors and motorists to drive carefully.

In neighboring Tunisia, two people were killed by flooding and cold weather, after heavy snowfall, according to the Interior ministry.
