Sahara: Speaker of Irish Parliament Discuss Last Developments

Speaker of the Irish Parliament Seán Ó Fearghaíl has seized the opportunity of his working visit to Morocco (Jan.7-11) to discuss latest developments of the Sahara issue.
Mr. Ó Fearghaíl, who met in Rabat several senior Moroccan officials including Head of Govt Saâd Eddine El Othmani and Speaker of the House of Representatives Habib El Malki, was received on Wednesday by chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), Khalihenna Ould Errachid.
During the meeting, Mr. Ould Errachid briefed the Irish leader on the Sahara issue and on the efforts made by Morocco to resolve this regional conflict.
He also stressed the pertinence of the autonomy plan offered by Morocco for the Sahara, affirming that this plan, which lays out a solution currently on the UN negotiating table, has been worked out by the Sahrawis themselves, who are the primarily concerned inhabitants.
Backed by the international community and described by the UN as “serious, realistic and credible”, the Moroccan autonomy plan enables the local inhabitants to exercise their right to run their affairs themselves, and to achieve integrated development in a free and stable environment.
Besides the Sahara issue, Speaker of the lower house of the Irish Parliament also reviewed with Moroccan officials cooperation prospects in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, trade, business, investments, justice, Human rights and the fight against climate change and illegal migration.
