Mauritania records 21% surge in internet subscriptions as traditional calls decline

Mauritania recorded a significant shift towards digital communication in 2024, with internet subscriptions rising by 20.8 per cent to more than 3.65 million, according to data from the Regulatory Authority contained in the 2025 Annual Guide to Economic Statistics.

The figures, published by Africa IT News on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, show that the growth in internet usage coincided with a decline in traditional telephone calls.

The total volume of outgoing telephone traffic fell by about 9 per cent in 2024, from 5.821 billion minutes to 5.295 billion minutes. Mobile calls accounted for almost all of the decline, dropping to 5.288 billion minutes.

Despite the fall in voice traffic, the total number of telephone subscribers increased by 4.1 per cent to more than 4.77 million, largely driven by mobile connections. Fixed-line calls, meanwhile, more than doubled to 7.35 million minutes, even as the number of fixed-line subscribers was cut by half.

The figures point to a broader transformation in Mauritania’s telecommunications sector, with consumers increasingly shifting from conventional voice calls towards messaging applications, internet services and other data-based platforms.
