Morocco is deploying a sweeping strategy to green its industrial base, placing decarbonization, innovation and the circular economy at the center of its industrial policy as it seeks to meet global energy transition demands and defend its competitiveness on international markets, according to a report relayed by L’Economiste.
The push centers on targeted support for businesses of all sizes, from micro-enterprises to large industrial groups, with new technical and financial assistance programs aimed at improving energy efficiency, greening manufacturing processes and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Companies are being encouraged to conduct energy audits, obtain environmental certifications and increase the use of recycled materials in their production cycles.
Industrial zones are also undergoing a strategic overhaul, with efforts to optimize energy consumption and build clean power supply chains across industrial sites. Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour said the territorial approach aims to significantly cut the carbon footprint of industrial sites while strengthening their appeal and competitiveness.
The circular economy forms another pillar of the strategy, with the ministry encouraging the recovery of industrial waste for reintegration into manufacturing processes, reducing Morocco’s dependence on imported raw materials while generating more domestic value added. Water management is also being reinforced, including wastewater recycling and stricter standards for industrial discharge.
To sustain the effort over the long term, Morocco is leaning on its Innovation Support Fund, which guides projects from applied research through prototyping to industrialization, alongside new technology hubs and startup incubators linking universities with industry. Longer term, the kingdom aims to build an integrated green industrial ecosystem capable of locally manufacturing solar panel and wind turbine components, building on its growing green hydrogen potential.
