Libyan political parties have called for the unification of state institutions and the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections under a consensual constitutional framework to restore stability in the country.
The appeal was made in a statement issued this Wednesday, July 22, during the first Conference of Libyan political parties in the central city of Sirte, where participants stressed the need to unify the executive and military institutions to strengthen the rule of law and meet citizens’ aspirations.
The parties said free and fair elections remain the most legitimate path to restoring state institutions, renewing their legitimacy and establishing a unified government capable of leading Libya towards lasting stability.
They also called for preserving Libya’s unity and sovereignty, promoting social peace, and welcomed ongoing efforts by the United Nations and regional and international partners to advance the country’s political process.
Libya has remained politically divided since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, with the UN continuing to mediate efforts aimed at securing a political settlement and organising long-delayed national elections.
