Libya: UN Warns of Rising Misinformation, Urges Responsible Communication and Verification

The United Nations in Libya has raised concerns over a growing wave of misinformation, disinformation and inflammatory rhetoric circulating on social media, warning that such content could heighten tensions and undermine stability in the country.

In a statement published on Facebook, the UN said false and misleading information poses risks to the security, dignity and daily lives of people across Libya, particularly amid the country’s ongoing political, economic and social challenges.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to working with national and local authorities, civil society groups, media organizations and communities to promote access to accurate and reliable information. It also urged individuals and institutions to verify information before sharing and to rely on credible sources.

The UN stressed that responsible communication and constructive public discourse are essential to fostering mutual respect and reducing the risk of discrimination or violence. It called on all actors to refrain from spreading or amplifying content that could incite hatred or unrest.

It further urged authorities to continue efforts to address incitement and harmful misinformation in line with Libyan law and international human rights standards, emphasizing that such measures must uphold accountability, due process and respect for human rights to safeguard national stability.
