Mauritania has validated its National Eye Health Strategic Plan 2026–2029 and formally joined the World Health Organization’s SPECS 2030 initiative, marking a significant policy milestone in its healthcare reform agenda.
The plan is designed to expand equitable, sustainable and quality eye care services nationwide, addressing needs across the full continuum of care from prevention and screening to treatment and visual rehabilitation.
Aligned with the country’s National Health Development Plan and the broader vision of Universal Health Coverage, the strategy reflects a coordinated effort to strengthen health system resilience and inclusivity.
Through the framework, authorities aim to build an integrated eye health system that prioritizes early detection, effective treatment pathways and long-term rehabilitation services for patients with visual impairment.
The policy also underscores a government commitment to improved sector governance, stronger resource mobilization and a more community-driven, equity-focused approach to healthcare delivery.
By joining the SPECS 2030 initiative, Mauritania positions itself within a global framework led by the World Health Organization to reduce avoidable visual impairment and expand access to essential eye care services. The initiative is expected to enhance technical cooperation, policy alignment and capacity building as the country advances its eye health agenda toward 2029.
