Group of Friends of South-South and Triangular Cooperation to be set up in UN at Morocco’s initiative

A Group of Friends of South-South and Triangular Cooperation will be set up at the United Nation at Morocco’s initiative.

The announcement was made by Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Omar Hilale, who serves as Chair of the UN High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation, during the closing of the expanded meeting of the Bureau of the said Committee, which was held this week in the Colombian city of Santa Marta.

“The momentum generated in Santa Marta must now translate into strengthened political coordination and sustained commitment to these two modalities of cooperation (South-South & Triangular),” the Moroccan diplomat noted.

“It is in this spirit of solidarity, ambition, and collective responsibility- which guided the proceedings in Santa Marta- that Morocco is pleased to announce the imminent creation in New York of the ‘Group of Friends of South-South and Triangular Cooperation,’ in partnership with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC),” he said.

The ambassador explained that the Kingdom views this initiative as “an open and informal platform” designed to foster dialogue, strategic reflection, and the strengthening and diversification of South-South and triangular cooperation within the United Nations system and beyond.

This initiative aligns with the strategy initiated by King Mohammed VI in support of a solidarity-based, action-oriented, and mutually beneficial South-South cooperation with countries of the Global South. It also reflects the royal vision of co-development dedicated to serving developing countries across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean and Pacific regions.

At a time when the international community is reflecting on the future of multilateralism within the framework of the “UN80” initiative launched by the UN Secretary-General, this Group of Friends aims to enhance the visibility of South-South and triangular cooperation and to consolidate political momentum surrounding its mechanisms.

It also seeks to create a dedicated space for exchanges, partnership development, technical assistance, training, and the strengthening of coordination among delegations within the UN system in New York.
