Morocco Supports Gavi Vaccine Alliance with $5 Mln Grant

Morocco has donated $5 million to Gavi Vaccine Alliance, becoming the first North African nation to provide direct financial support to this public-private global health partnership designed to increase equitable access to new and underused vaccines for children in the world’s poorest countries.

The grant agreement was signed in Casablanca in presence of Moroccan health minister Amine Tahraoui on the sidelines of “GITEX Future Health” convened lately in Morocco’s economic capital.

With this donation, Morocco honors the commitment it made in 2025 when it joined the group of donor countries supporting the international vaccine alliance which helps lower-income countries purchase vaccines.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Mr. Mohammed Tarik Bchir, Director of Treasury & External Finance, said the grant is part of a spirit of shared responsibility and active solidarity, reflecting Morocco’s commitment to vaccine equity.

He also described Gavi as a trusted partner and a major actor in global health security, recalling the significant results achieved since its creation, particularly in terms of vaccination and the reduction of child mortality.

For his part, GAVI Executive Director Bjorn Gillsater thanked Morocco for its contribution which reflects a strategic vision that sees investment in vaccination as a lever for stability, prosperity, and development for the African continent.

Gavi brings together developing countries and donor governments, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the World Bank, the vaccine industry, civil society, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Since 2000, Gavi has helped immunize over 1.2 billion children and prevented more than 20.6 million future deaths.
