Sahara: Japan Joins Countries Supporting Autonomy Plan under Moroccan Sovereignty

Japan has thrown its weight behind UN Security Council resolution 2797 endorsing the Autonomy plan in the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty and expressed support for the efforts made by the UN Secretary General and his Envoy for the Sahara for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution of this five-decade regional conflict.

The Japanese stand on the Sahara comes in the joint statement issued following the videoconference meeting held Friday between the two countries’ foreign ministers Nasser Bourita and Motegi Toshimitsu.

Japan has adopted the same wording that comes in the UNSC 2797 resolution and pledged to act accordingly at the diplomatic and economic levels.

Morocco and Japan celebrate this year the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations, based on friendship, cooperation, and mutual support.

In the joint statement, Tokyo hailed Morocco’s efforts to advance African integration, bolster cooperation ties with African countries and strengthen peace, stability and shared prosperity in the region.

It commended in this regard the Atlantic Initiatives launched by King Mohammed VI, namely the “Initiative of Atlantic African States,” the “African Atlantic Gas Pipeline,” and the “Initiative for Sahel Countries’ Access to the Atlantic Ocean.”

Morocco and Japan have agreed to strengthen further their cooperation ties, building a hub of stability and growth, capable of responding to the global challenges of the 21st century with agility and solidarity.

The two countries are looking forward to fostering their strategic dialogue through regular political consultations, aimed at strengthening coordination on issues of common interests.

Japan is enhancing investment in Morocco, particularly in automotive manufacturing, aerospace, and high-value industries. Over 50 Japanese companies operate in Morocco, which is increasingly recognized as a gateway for Japanese firms to Africa.

Furthermore, Moroccan-Japanese cooperation is gaining momentum in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and phosphate mining/fertilizer production.
