Morocco’s approach in the fight against terrorism and extremism was highlighted in Vienna before the 23rd regional meeting of heads of intelligence and security services.
The approach was detailed by Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) Abdellatif Hammouchi, who is participating in the regional meeting, alongside security and intelligence officials from the UAE, Jordan, KSA, Iraq, Libya, Oman, Tunisia, Sudan, Turkey and Pakistan, the DGSN-DGST hub said in a statement.
In his address at the meeting, aimed at pooling regional efforts to face the threats of terrorist organizations, Hammouchi outlined the integrated and multidimensional Moroccan model in the fight against terrorism and extremism, and mapped out the current ramifications of the terrorist threats in several conflict zones across the globe.
Morocco’s police chief also underlined the shared challenges arising from terrorist threats and the means to confront them under a collective and concerted approach.
Hammouchi’s working visit to Vienna May 5-7 at the head of a senior security delegation includes activities and consultation meetings on multilateral security and intelligence cooperation organized by relevant UN offices.
During his stay, Hammouchi also held talks with his Austrian counterpart Sylvia Mayer, Head of State security and intelligence, on ways to strengthen security partnership, with a view to improving joint cooperation mechanisms and defying common threats.
Both officials tackled topics of common interest, from migration, cross-border crime, human trafficking, terrorism and extremism, money laundering, arms and drug trafficking, to the exchange of information on international wanted individuals.
The Austrian official hailed Morocco’s national police significant support that helped thwart dangerous terrorist plots, and apprehend extremists operating on Austrian soil.
She also voiced the hope to draw on the Moroccan experience in this regard, underscoring the safety and stability that the Kingdom boasts.
As part of bilateral cooperation, the Moroccan delegation also held meetings with Pakistani, Turkish and Omani security and intelligence representatives, during which they reviewed means of bolstering cooperation with these friendly countries, the statement added.
The visit confirms once again the prominent position and active role of Morocco as a key player in joint efforts to preserve international security and stability. It also reflects the credibility and trust placed in Moroccan security services by their European and regional partners, the statement said.
