Former Senegal head coach Aliou Cissé has resigned from his role as manager of the Libya national football team after overseeing just 10 matches, he confirmed on Wednesday, April 8.
Cissé’s final two games in charge ended in draws last month, following friendly encounters against Niger and Liberia. “This March has been very special for me as it marked my last gathering as coach of the Libyan national team”, he said.
“This adventure has been incredibly enriching, both professionally and personally”. The departure brings a swift close to what had been a short-lived managerial spell, despite the coach’s distinguished pedigree on the continental stage.
Cissé previously led his home nation for nearly a decade, from 2015 to 2024, guiding Senegal to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021, after finishing as runners-up in 2019.
His exit also follows Libya’s failure to secure a historic first qualification to the FIFA World Cup, after finishing third in their qualifying group behind Cameroon and Cape Verde.
