The Islamic Development Bank has approved a $59.28 million financing to support a rural electrification project in Mauritania, targeting improved access to affordable electricity across several regions.
The initiative will focus on the Wilayas of Adrar, Assaba, Inchiri, Brakna, Hodh Chargui, Hodh El Gharbi, and Tagant, with the objective of enhancing equitable and sustainable energy access.
The funding package comprises $25.35 million from the Bank and $33.93 million from its Concessionary Financing Fund, reflecting a broader commitment to addressing infrastructure deficits in member states.
Beyond energy access, the project integrates a social impact dimension, including the installation of 10 multifunctional energy platforms to be managed by local women’s cooperatives. These platforms are expected to stimulate micro-enterprises and improve livelihoods among vulnerable communities, reinforcing inclusive economic development.
