AFCON to Be Held Every Four Years Starting in 2028, Says CAF Head

The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, confirmed on Saturday in Rabat that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be held every four years starting in 2028.

“The AFCON will be held every four years starting in 2028 to allow teams to better prepare for this continental competition,” Motsepe said at a press conference following the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Rabat.

The president of African football’s governing body also announced the launch of an African Nations League reserved for African national teams, a competition that will aim to raise the level of competition on the continent and generate more financial revenue.

According to him, these reforms are part of an overall vision aimed at developing African football while taking into account the interests of African national teams, players, clubs, and African football.

The CAF president also announced an increase in the prize money for the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations, which will rise to $10 million.

The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will kick off on Sunday with a match between Morocco and Comoros at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
