Morocco and China Target Africa Partnership and Trade Balance in Beijing Talks

The seventh session of the Morocco-China Joint Economic, Commercial, and Technical Cooperation Commission convened Tuesday in Beijing, focusing on deepening strategic partnerships while addressing bilateral trade imbalances. Industry and Commerce Minister Ryad Mezzour co-chaired proceedings with Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Zhang Li.
The high-level session demonstrates both nations’ commitment to pursuing strategic dialogue initiated by King Mohammed VI and President Xi Jinping, consolidating ties between two countries with millennial traditions. A significant Moroccan delegation comprising multiple ministerial department representatives attended discussions.
Chinese participants welcomed Morocco’s economic development advances, particularly praising the king’s vision as “clairvoyant, solidarity-driven, and committed.” Mezzour presented the kingdom’s major structural projects reflecting modernization and development dynamics while highlighting the major investment opportunities the 2030 World Cup co-hosted with Spain and Portugal presents.
African dimensions occupied prominent positions in exchanges, with in-depth discussions on Morocco’s role as an African hub and strategic platform for developing China-Africa relations within the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation framework. Both parties devoted particular attention to balancing bilateral commercial flows, examining mechanisms potentially opening Chinese markets further to Moroccan exports through win-win partnership spirits.
Cooperation opportunities across strategic sectors formed discussion cores. Infrastructure, technological innovation, digitalization, and connectivity rank among priority domains identified by both parties intending to fully leverage value chain complementarity. Exchanges also addressed promising areas including development strategies, economic, commercial, industrial, and customs cooperation, investment, higher education, tourism, and renewable energies.
Following commission proceedings, both parties committed to renewed depth in Morocco-China strategic partnerships, reaffirming determination to transform dialogue into concrete, mutually beneficial achievements. Mezzour held bilateral meetings with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology Xiong Jijun, with Wang expressing satisfaction regarding his 2024 Morocco visit while calling for strengthened commercial exchanges and mutual investment encouragement.
