Morocco Sets Pepper Export Record as Citrus Sales Surge in Europe

Morocco’s pepper exports hit nearly 190,000 metric tons during the 2024-2025 season, generating more than $240 million and marking the fifth consecutive record, the foreign exchange regulator said.

The volume represents a 3.7% increase over last year and caps an average annual growth rate of 13% over the past five years, the regulator said in a recent report.

Exports peak between December and April, with January and March leading this season at 25,000 and 23,000 tons respectively.

Europe remains the top destination, absorbing 82% of shipments, led by Spain, France, Germany and the Netherlands. About 7% went to West Africa, mainly Mauritania and Senegal, while exports to the United Kingdom have surged fifteenfold in five years.

Morocco also expanded its reach to 19 secondary markets, up from 15 last year.

The country’s citrus sector is also booming. Mandarins and clementines posted record sales in Germany, with 8,200 tons worth $12.1 million, a 60% jump from the previous high in 2022-2023, according to the same report.

For the first time, revenues exceeded $10 million, placing Morocco fourth among suppliers to the German market.
