The Netherlands affirmed that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most feasible solution to definitely put an end to the regional dispute.”
This position, falling in the context of the international momentum created under the impetus of King Mohammed VI in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the Autonomy Plan, was expressed in the Joint Statement adopted by the Moroccan and Dutch Foreign Ministers, Nasser Bourita and David Van Weel, following a meeting in The Hague.
The Joint Statement also indicated that the Netherlands welcomes the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and expresses its full support to the efforts of the Secretary General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate and lead negotiations founded on the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, with the aim of reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution, as recommended by the relevant Security Council resolutions.
