Morocco among top 10 cobalt producers in Africa
Morocco is among the major producers of colbat in Africa with approximately 4,500 tons expected in 2025, according to the “African Exponent” online media platform.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) tops the chart with 170,000 – 190,000 tons, accounting for 70-80% of global cobalt output. Rwanda comes in the 2nd place with 9,000 tons, followed by Zimbabwe (8,000 tons), Madagascar (7,000 tons), Tanzania (5,500 tons) and Morocco (4,500 tons).
Uganda ranks 7th (4,000 tons), followed by South Africa (3,000 tons), Zambia (2,500 tons), and Botswana (1,000 tons).
With the global transition to a green energy, cobalt has become increasingly important for manufacturers of electric vehicles. This silvery-blue metal is an indispensable component in the lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles (EVs) and store renewable energy, making it a cornerstone of modern technology and climate policy.
As demand surges, driven by national pledges to achieve net-zero emissions and the rapid electrification of the global auto fleet, the security and diversification of the cobalt supply chain have become paramount concerns for governments and industries worldwide.
