Morocco emerges as top player in global citrus market with record export growth

In a remarkable display of agricultural prowess, Morocco’s citrus sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, with exports projected to reach 597,000 tons in the 2024-2025 season—a striking 31% increase from the previous year. This achievement solidifies the country’s position as the third-largest citrus exporter in Africa, trailing only South Africa and Egypt.

The surge in exports stems from significant technological advancements in irrigation systems and water resource management, propelling national production to a historic high of 2.1 million tons. This 16% production increase reflects Morocco’s successful implementation of modern agricultural practices and sustainable farming methods.

Mandarin varieties lead the export portfolio, accounting for 83% of shipments at approximately 500,000 tons, followed by oranges at 15%, with lemons rounding out the product mix. This strategic product distribution aligns with growing international market demands and consumer preferences.

Expanding Market Reach Through Strategic Infrastructure

A groundbreaking development in Morocco’s citrus export strategy is the establishment of a new maritime route connecting Agadir to Dakar, marking a significant step in strengthening trade ties with West African markets.
