Senegal’s ruling Pastef party secures large majority in Parliament
The National Commission for the Counting of Votes has officially announced on November 21 the results, confirming a landslide victory for Ousmane Sonko’s Pastef party.
Pastef secured 130 out of 165 parliamentary seats, far exceeding the 3/5 qualified majority it aimed for, now controlling 78% of the legislature. This historic win includes victories in 40 of Senegal’s 46 departments and 7 of the 8 diaspora constituencies, a feat unmatched since Abdou Diouf’s Socialist Party triumph in 1988.
Remarkably, Pastef achieved this without forming a coalition, a rare move in Senegalese politics.
In stark contrast, the Takku Wallu coalition, led by former President Macky Sall, emerged as the main opposition force with only 16 seats, a sharp decline from the 83 it held in the previous legislature. Former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, once Sall’s protégé and now a rival, secured seven seats and one departmental victory. Meanwhile, Dakar Mayor Barthélémy Dias’ coalition managed only three seats.
By Sunday evening, opposition leaders acknowledged Pastef’s decisive victory, signaling a transformative shift in Senegal’s political landscape.
