Côte d’Ivoire: Dozens of journalists covering AFCON 2023 injured in road accident
As many as 36 reporters covering the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire have been injured after their bus coming from the city of Yamoussoukro had an accident Wednesday January 24 as they entered capital Abidjan.
The accident reportedly occurred at 2 am GMT at the Carena Boulevard, in Plateau commune, in Abidjan.
The reporters, among whom several foreigners, were coming from Yamoussoukro, after covering the fixture between Senegal and Guinea Conakry, in group C.
According to the driver’s count, the front tire of the bus fell into a pothole on the narrowed CARENA lane. He added that the vehicle lost balance and struck the concrete in the middle of the road before ending up on an electricity pole in the opposite direction.
Twenty of those injured were reportedly sent to Treichville Teaching hospital while the remaining 16 were whisked to Angré teaching hospital for treatment.
Two journalists, one from Spain and the other from Egypt in addition to the driver were slated to go under the knife at Treichville Teaching hospital while three others were also scheduled to undergo surgeries at Angré teaching hospital.
