Climate Change Performance: Morocco ranks 7th in global ranking
Morocco rises one spot to 7th global ranking in this year’s Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI). As in the previous two years, Morocco rates high in three main CCPI categories: Green house gas (GHG) emissions, energy use and climate policy.
Morocco has been at the forefront of reducing its GHG emissions and it strengthened this effort after COP22, says the CCPI in the 2023 report, noting that the North African Kingdom has established a framework to reduce emissions and adhere to the Paris accords.
According to this year ranking, the first three top overall positions remain empty. Denmark ranked fourth followed by Sweden and Chile. Algeria, Morocco’s neighbor, was placed in the 48th position, among the low performers.
Morocco outperformed several European countries including Norway, UK, Netherlands, Portugal, Finland, Germany and Italy. The CCPI experts welcome the positive developments Morocco witnessed over the past years.
They also hail the measures taken by the government to further improve the country’s climate performance. Morocco has committed to a target of planting 600,000 hectares of forest by 2030.
The CCPI is an instrument to enable transparency in national and international climate politics. It evaluates the performance of 59 countries and the European Union, which together generate 90%+ of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The CCPI looks at four categories, with 14 indicators: Greenhouse gas emissions (40% of the overall score), renewable energy (20%), energy use (20%) and climate policy (20%).
The index also evaluates countries’ progress in implementing policies geared towards achieving the Paris Agreement goals.
