Morocco reports first confirmed case of monkeypox

The first confirmed case of monkeypox has been recorded in Morocco, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection announced Thursday.

“The case, coming from a European country, was identified under the protocol established by our country since the launch of the global health alert,” the ministry said in a statement.

The patient’s health condition is “stable and is not a cause for concern,” the ministry added. The confirmed case is under medical surveillance in accordance with the health measures adopted in this regard.

Individuals who have been in contact with the first monkeypox case have been tested and are awaiting results in isolation, said Government Spokesperson Mustapha Baitas in a press briefing this Thursday.

Baitas explained that “individuals who have had direct contact with the confirmed case have been identified” and are being closely monitored, emphasizing that “the detection process is being taken very seriously, especially in light of the current touristic summer season.”

The World Health Organization has been notified about the country of origin of the confirmed case.

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection said it will continue to communicate with the national public opinion on the developments of the health situation.
