Morocco wins international praise for eradicating torture

Morocco has won international recognition for its steady efforts to eradicate torture domestically and internationally.

Morocco ratified the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT) in 1993 and deposited its ratification instruments in 2014.

The North African country has also launched a national preventive mechanism against torture (NPM).

Morocco’s commitment to eradicate torture has earned it an ‘A’ rating by the .

The UN body commended Morocco for adopting the law on the national mechanism for the prevention of torture, designating its National Human Rights Council as the operative body.

Besides Morocco, only Argentina, Burkina Faso, Denmark and Sweden received the top notch A rating.

In 2017, UN Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights Andrew Gilmour lauded Morocco’s progress to eliminate torture and all forms of degrading treatment.

He also commended Morocco for its support for the UN office for human rights and for promoting rights and combating all forms of violence.
