Train derailment kills 7, injures 80 near Rabat

A tragic train derailment took place on Tuesday morning causing the death of seven people and leaving at least 80 people injured.

After the crash, King Mohammed VI gave orders to the minister of the Interior and the minister of Transport who visited the site where aids were evacuating the wounded to the Mohammed V military hospital in Rabat in order to receive the necessary treatment, said a statement by the royal Office.

The King also decided to take care of the expenses of the funerals and burial of the victims, the same source said.

An investigation has been launched by the national train office (ONCF) to determine the causes and circumstances of this accident.

The Public Prosecutor at the Rabat Appeal Court has also announced the opening of a judicial inquiry to shed light on the causes and circumstances of the accident.

The train runs on a busy line between Kenitra and Casablanca where many people commute daily to their work or schools.
