Morocco, Largest Fruit & Vegetables Supplier to Spanish Market in 2017

Morocco ranked first in the list of Spain’s suppliers with fruits and vegetables with exports totaling €462.3 million up to October 2017, FEPEX, the Spanish federation of fruits and vegetables producers, said.

Morocco exports of agricultural products grew 36% compared to the same period in 2016, FEPEX noted.

The Spanish federation highlighted the upward trend of Spain’s imports of Moroccan vegetables and fruits, which grew from €153.5 million in 2013 to €274.7 million in 2015 and €340.6 million in 2016.

In terms of volume, imports from Morocco totaled 144,432 tons in 2013; 163,675 tons in 2014; 199,247 tons in 2015; 246,349 tons in 2016; and 314,112 tons in 2017.

Last year, Morocco came ahead of France, Spain’s second largest supplier of fruits and vegetables with exports worth €256.2 million, followed by Portugal (€139 million), the Netherlands (€119 million) and Belgium (€88 million).

Spain remained Morocco’s top trading partner in 2016 with trade turnover totaling $10.6 billion up from $9.3 billion in 2015.

Between 2015 and 2016, Morocco’s imports from Spain rose from $4.4 billion to $6.2 billion, while its exports to the country jumped from $4.2 billion to $5.1 billion.

France, which had long been the largest trading partner of Morocco, ranked second in 2016 with $9.5 billion in trade volume, after it registered $8.4 billion in 2015.

Morocco is the 51st largest export economy in the world. In 2016, Morocco exported $22.6 billion and imported $41.5 billion, resulting in a negative trade balance of $18.9B. In 2016 the GDP of Morocco was $101B and its GDP per capita was $7840.
