Congressman Joe Wilson: It’s High Time to Designate Polisario FTO & Impose CAATSA Sanctions on Algeria

U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson has lambasted Russia, Algeria and Polisario after Moscow vetoed a widely supported US draft resolution endorsing Autonomy plan in the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty and restructuring the UN Mission.

“The goal of Russia is further destabilization of Africa”, said the Congressman in a comment posted Saturday on his X account. The Republican Representative of South Carolina said that those who benefit from the stalemate are “Russia, its puppet Algeria, Iran, and the Hezbollah who trained Algeria-backed Polisario Front”.

Time has come “to designate the Polisario as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and impose CAATSA sanctions on Algeria for building an arsenal of Russian weapons to cause CHAOS in North Africa,” underlined the Congressman.

The Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) is a U.S. federal law enacted on August 2, 2017. It imposes strict economic and political sanctions against Iran, Russia, North Korea.

The primary goal of the Act is to deter and punish aggressive or destabilizing behavior by these nations through secondary sanctions—meaning the U.S. can penalize non-U.S. individuals or foreign companies that engage in significant transactions with designated entities in those countries.

In June 2025, Joe Wilson and Democrat Representative Jimmy Panetta introduced in the House of Representative a bill for labelling the Algeria-backed Polisario an FTO. The “Polisario Front Terrorist Designation Act” has gained the support of several congressmen.

A similar bill, submitted at the U.S. Senate by Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton and Rick Scott, is also gaining momentum. The Senators urge the U.S. administration to take actions against Polisario for its ties with the Iranian regime seeking to turn the Algeria-backed separatists into the Houthis of North Africa.
