Congressman urges end to US aid to Kais Saied’s Tunisia
US Comgressman Joe Wilson urged his country to stop offering aid to Tunisia due to the anti-American stands of its autocratic president Kais Saied and his crackdown on civil liberties.
In a series of posts on X, Wilson decried the oppressive nature of the Tunisian regime, which he called “a police state dictatorship.”
“In 2023, America provided $167.2 million in aid to Tunisia, a police state dictatorship,” he said on X.
“Tunisian dictator Kais Saied was a major supporter of the brutal Assad regime in Syria. Assad is not laughing anymore and Saied will go the way of Assad,” he added.
“Today sadly, Tunisia is a full rule of gun police state,” he said, warning of Tunisia’s ties with Iran.
He urged sanctions and a halt of US aid to Tunisia, which took 167.2 million dollars in 2023.
