Romania is preparing to resume sheep exports to Libya as a Libyan delegation visits from 5 to 10 October 2026 to assess veterinary and technical requirements for restarting the trade.
The delegation’s program includes inspections of farms, livestock collection centres, slaughterhouses and an animal health and diagnostics Institute, focusing on veterinary controls, biosecurity and traceability.
Romania’s National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority said exports would depend on completing vaccination procedures and meeting agreed health guarantees. Libya has expressed readiness to resume imports, with discussions on quantities and contracts expected later.
The trade was suspended from 2011 to 2023 before resuming following negotiations on revised veterinary health certificates. Romania’s live sheep exports to Libya were valued at US$14.3 million in 2024.
