Libya and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening African coordination and cooperation, while welcoming the reopening of the headquarters of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) in Tripoli.
The commitment was made during a meeting between the Libyan and Nigerian Foreign Affairs Ministers, Taher Al-Baour and Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, on the sidelines of the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 28 and 29, 2026.
The two sides stressed the need for continued consultation within African Union institutions to address regional and global challenges through solidarity and partnership. They described the reopening of the CEN-SAD headquarters in Tripoli as an important step towards strengthening joint African action and consolidating regional cooperation.
The meeting also reviewed Libya-Nigeria bilateral relations, with focus on expanding cooperation in political, economic and institutional areas. Both countries exchanged views on key challenges facing the continent and emphasized the importance of greater coordination among African nations to promote development, security and stability.
The Community of sahel-Saharan States, known as CEN-SAd, is an international organization and a regional economic Community recognized by the African Union. It was set up in February 1998 in tripoli and now gathers 29 members from North, West, east and Central Africa. The grouping seeks to achieve the region’s economic and social integration.
