Mauritania: Two major energy projects in Nouakchott to be completed by end of 2026

Mauritania’s Prime Minister, Mokhtar Ould Diay, has announced accelerated progress on two major energy infrastructure projects in Nouakchott, with completion expected before the end of 2026.

In a Facebook post on July 13, 2026, Ould Diay said work was advancing on the expansion of a 72-megawatt (MW) power plant and the extension of liquid fuel storage facilities by 100,000 cubic metres (m³).

He said the projects form part of a development program aimed at strengthening the country’s energy capacity and security. The Prime Minister added that the projects are being closely monitored by teams from the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum to ensure timely completion.

The new power plant expansion will increase Nouakchott’s electricity generation capacity from 180 MW to 252 MW, improving power supply in the capital. Meanwhile, the Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company (SMH) is expanding fuel storage facilities at the Port of Friendship, which will raise the country’s total storage capacity to 123,000 m³. The Government says the two projects are expected to enhance Mauritania’s energy resilience and provide long-term support for economic growth.
