Mauritania’s President might seek second term in office

Mauritania’s incumbent President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani could seek another term in office, Cabinet spokesperson and Oil minister Nani O. Chrougha hinted at the possibility, adding that it will be in the interest of the nation.

Chrougha made the remark Wednesday November 1st at the traditional weekly press briefing.

The state official indicated that a second mandate will enable the military general turned politician to finish the ongoing projects he has launched. He also indicated that he has recently witnessed several opinion leaders, key figures, groups, organizations, and political players calling for the president to run for a second term.

Ghazouani came to power in August 2019 following hot disputed elections that the opposition rejected as rigged.

The 66-year-old man replaced his former boss Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz who led the country for 11 years. The former leader is currently standing on trial and faces 20-years in jail for multiple charges including money embezzlement.
