Morocco to Issue New Generation of Biometric Passports

Morocco is taking a new step in modernizing its travel documents. The Council of Government adopted, at its weekly meeting Thursday, a draft decree, amending the 2008 decree governing the biometric passport, opening the way for a new generation of passports designed to enhance document security and align it with the latest standards.

Presenting the text, the Interior Minister said the reform is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen protection of the Moroccan passport against forgery and document fraud. government spokesman Mustapha Baitas detailed the decision following the Council meeting.

The draft decree sets out the implementation framework for the new document, with its technical specifications to be defined through a joint order from the Interior and Foreign Affairs ministries, which will also determine the procedures and conditions for obtaining it.

Passports currently in circulation will remain valid until they expire or are progressively replaced, meaning holders of a valid passport will not be required to renew it immediately. Beyond its security upgrades, Baitas said the new passport is also intended to showcase national identity, reflecting what he described as Moroccan identity in its many facets through a redesigned document.

The reform forms part of a wider strategy to modernize administrative services and identity documents. By incorporating a new generation of security technologies, the future biometric passport aims to strengthen the reliability of the Moroccan document while easing its use in international travel.
