Moroccan frigate Mohammed VI arrives in New York for US 250th anniversary naval celebrations

Morocco’s Royal Navy frigate Mohammed VI has arrived in New York after completing a transatlantic crossing to participate in major maritime events linked to the United States’ 250th anniversary commemorations, highlighting long-standing military and diplomatic ties between Rabat and Washington, Moroccan media reported.

The frigate, the flagship of the Royal Moroccan Navy, is expected to take part in multinational naval activities and ceremonial events bringing together warships from several countries for the US semiquincentennial celebrations.

Morocco’s participation forms part of broader international naval exercises and reviews organized by the US Navy, including FleetEx 250 and related events designed to mark the anniversary while promoting cooperation among allied and partner maritime forces.

The deployment underscores the close defense relationship between Morocco and the United States, one of Washington’s oldest international partnerships. Moroccan and U.S. naval forces have regularly participated in joint exercises, training activities and maritime security initiatives in recent years.

Previously, Moroccan naval personnel joined preparations in Norfolk, Virginia, for the international naval review and fleet exercises associated with the anniversary celebrations, working alongside other participating navies to strengthen interoperability and operational coordination.

Commissioned in 2014, the Mohammed VI is Morocco’s most advanced surface combatant and serves as the flagship of the Royal Moroccan Navy.

The vessel is equipped for anti-submarine warfare, air defense and maritime security missions and is among the most capable frigates operating in Africa.
