Morocco Secures Nine Leadership Positions in African Union Governance Organs

Morocco has consolidated its position within the African Union’s institutional architecture, securing nine positions of primary responsibility across key continental organs following North African regional consultations. The outcome places the Kingdom first among North African states in the distribution of negotiated posts at the regional level.

The responsibilities allocated to Morocco span several strategic areas of AU governance. At the ministerial level, Morocco will hold the Vice-Presidency of the Committee on African Candidacies in the International System and the Vice-Presidency of the Bureau responsible for contribution scales and the assessment of member states’ quota shares — both central to the organization’s institutional functioning and financial governance.

Within the technical specialized committees, Morocco will sit on the Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs and the Committee on Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry and Mineral Resources. At the level of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREP) sub-committees, Morocco will hold the Vice-Presidency of the Sub-Committee on Institutional Reforms, the Presidency of the Sub-Committee on Environmental Issues, and a seat on the Sub-Committee on Human Rights, Democracy and Governance.

Morocco has also been designated to the Board of Directors of the Continental Centre on Migration, with a commitment to contribute Moroccan experts to the center’s work. This appointment reflects the continent’s recognition of King Mohammed VI’s leadership role on AU migration issues and Morocco’s advocacy for a humane, solidary and responsibility-sharing approach to migration governance.

Taken together, the nine posts represent a significant reinforcement of Morocco’s continental influence, translating its engagement across AU priorities — institutional reform, economic integration, climate and migration — into concrete governance responsibilities at the heart of the African Union’s decision-making architecture.
