Sudan’s Darfur and Kordofan Regions Gripped by Clashes, Cholera Threat, Humanitarian Strain – UN Warns

Western Sudan’s Darfur and Kordofan regions are facing a deepening convergence of crises, as intercommunal violence, renewed warfare, and a suspected cholera outbreak stretch already fragile humanitarian systems to breaking point, United Nations has warned.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Monday, June 1st, that escalating clashes between rival community groups in Central and South Darfur have resulted in casualties and forced fresh waves of displacement, with some civilians reportedly fleeing across the border into neighbouring Chad.

According to the Agency, insecurity has forced the suspension of humanitarian operations serving an estimated 21,000 people in Central Darfur, further narrowing access to essential aid in affected areas.

In West Kordofan, health authorities are grappling with a suspected cholera outbreak, with more than 300 suspected cases and 77 deaths recorded as of Sunday. OCHA cautioned that response efforts are being hampered by shortages of critical supplies and limited resources, despite ongoing interventions by humanitarian partners.

The UN noted that Sudan had only recently declared an end to a wider cholera outbreak in March, which recorded more than 124,000 cases and over 3,500 deaths, underscoring the fragility of public health gains in the country.

Humanitarian officials warned that the onset of the rainy season this month is likely to intensify the spread of waterborne diseases, particularly as damaged infrastructure and insecurity continue to restrict access to clean water and sanitation services.

The violence has also intensified over the Eid Al Adha period, with reports of dozens of civilian deaths across parts of Kordofan and Darfur. In North Kordofan’s Bara area, at least a dozen civilians were reportedly killed in renewed clashes, while the International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 2,200 people have been newly displaced in recent days.

In West Kordofan, local sources reported a drone strike in the Kadam area that killed at least eight civilians and injured several others. In Central Darfur, at least 10 people, including three children, were reportedly killed in a separate drone strike on Um Dukhun. OCHA reiterated urgent appeals for all parties to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians and critical infrastructure, and ensure unhindered access for aid operations.

However, the agency stressed that funding gaps remain severe, noting that the Sudan humanitarian response plan—valued at US$2.9 billion—is only about 22 percent funded, leaving vast operational shortfalls as needs continue to rise.
