Morocco set to make Dakhla, pearl of Sahara, a standout tourist destination

Morocco’s tourism promotion office (ONMT) is stepping up efforts to position the Sahara Atlantic city of Dakhla as a standout and high-value tourist destination, leveraging its unique natural assets and expanding air links to drive sustainable growth.

In a statement, the ONMT said its teams held a series of strategic meetings in Dakhla with members of the Regional Tourism Council, local operators and territorial authorities to align priorities and activate concrete growth levers for the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region.

At the center of this push is the ambition to take Dakhla to the next level by consolidating its positioning in high-value segments, notably sports, nature and experiential tourism. Known internationally for its vast lagoon, steady winds and world-class kitesurfing and windsurfing spots, Dakhla also offers pristine beaches, desert landscapes, migratory bird sites and a growing eco-lodge and wellness offering.

The ONMT said its strategy is built around four operational pillars: air connectivity, marketing, digital promotion and distribution.

The ONMT has secured several structured partnerships with national and international airlines to connect Dakhla directly to priority markets through new point-to-point routes, particularly with France and Spain, aiming to sustainably open up the destination and support steady growth in international arrivals.

Promotion has also been stepped up, with a stronger focus on digital campaigns, content creation and influencer marketing, alongside intensified promotion in key source markets. Media partnerships and a visible presence at major international tourism fairs, including IFTM Top Resa and FITUR, are reinforcing Dakhla’s profile on the global tourism map.

Efforts are also under way to build a strong identity for Dakhla beyond kitesurfing, highlighting its seaside appeal, unspoiled nature and authentic experiences.

On the commercial side, the ONMT is strengthening partnerships with tour operators and booking platforms to boost volumes, extend average stays and better showcase local tourism products, targeting higher-spending visitors and supporting the upmarket shift of the local ecosystem.

Domestic tourism is another strategic pillar, with initiatives planned to encourage more Moroccans to discover Dakhla through tailored offers and targeted promotion.

The ONMT said the initiative reflects close coordination between public and private stakeholders to accelerate projects and ensure controlled, sustainable growth, reaffirming its commitment to making Morocco’s destinations benchmarks for performance, sustainability and value creation.
