Morocco has fuel stocks for up to 55 days, secures gas and coal for Q2 – ministry

Morocco has sufficient diesel stocks to cover 51 days of consumption and petrol inventories for 55 days, while supplies of gas and coal have been secured for the second quarter of this year, the energy ministry said.

The country has taken steps to ensure energy security amid pressure on global demand and prices stemming from the war in the Gulf, a minister told Reuters by email.

Coal supplies are secured until June, and new tenders will be launched this month to generate electricity through September, the minister said.

Gas consumption has fallen by 11% so far this year due to higher hydroelectric power production after abundant rainfall filled dams, the minister added.

Imports of natural gas via Spanish terminals represents 10% of Morocco’s energy consumption, dominated by coal.

Morocco aims to raise renewable energy capacity to 52% of its total energy mix by 2030. The government has also maintained subsidies for butane gas, widely used by households, despite a 68% rise in international prices.

The government also backs electricity prices and has offered subsidies to public transporters and professional drivers to cushion inflation.
