Moroccan port authorities expect more traffic in Africa’s and the Mediterranean’s largest port Tanger Med, following instability in the Gulf, Moroccan media le360 reported.
They also have rejected media reports, mainly from Spanish outlets, claiming that the Tanger Med complex is facing unprecedented congestion linked to disruptions in global shipping caused by tensions in the Middle East, le360 reported.
Several Spanish media reports alleged that the port was “unable to absorb” rising traffic and that “dozens of ships” were waiting offshore.
They attributed the supposed backlog to a global rerouting of maritime lines away from the Gulf region.
Speaking to le360, a source at Tanger Med dismissed that claim, saying the port was operating normally with no vessels at anchorage.
“This is totally false. Activity continues at a regular pace. The idea of saturation exists only in the imagination of these media,” the source said.
The reports surfaced as Tanger Med continues to post record results. In 2025, the port handled more traffic than the Spanish ports of Algeciras and Valencia combined.
